Bobtail / Non-Trucking Liability
Coverage Guide
Coverage when driving without a trailer, outside of dispatch
What Does Bobtail / Non-Trucking Liability Cover?
Bobtail insurance (also called non-trucking liability or NTL) covers your cab when you're driving without a trailer and not under dispatch. This fills the gap that exists when you're driving home after delivering a load, going to pick up a new load, or running a personal errand in your truck. The motor carrier's liability policy only covers you while you're under dispatch — not personal use or between loads.
Who Needs Bobtail / Non-Trucking Liability?
Owner-operators who are leased to a motor carrier (under a carrier's authority) need bobtail coverage. The carrier's policy protects you while dispatched, but off-duty driving is your personal responsibility. Most lease agreements require you to carry bobtail/NTL coverage of at least $1,000,000. If you run under your own authority, you don't need bobtail — your own primary liability covers you at all times.
